One of the most popular siding options on the market today is prefinished siding. Part of its popularity is the 25-year warranty offered by most manufacturers. However, you need to know that the warranty has some small print you might not have noticed. First of all, quite often it is a prorated warranty, meaning that if it fails in year 24, you don’t get new siding– you get 1/25th of the cost of the new siding . . . at best.
We mention “at best” because of the rest of the small print. It generally goes something like this — damages due to not being properly maintained are excluded from warranty coverage. The problem is that they are often rather vague about what proper maintenance is. With other types of prefinished siding, the small print alerts you to the fact that although the product is designed to give you 25 years or even more of service, the part of the warranty covering peeling and chipping lasts only for 15 years because it needs to be re-painted periodically.
At Complete Value Painting, we want you to have all the facts so you can take the best possible care of your home. We have nothing against prefinished siding. In fact, it is a beautiful and durable option that will serve you well – with proper maintenance. We just want you to be aware that it isn’t something you can neglect for 25 years and expect it to continue performing. It is important to contact a painter periodically to have the siding assessed to see if it is time to be painted again. If you would like to know more about maintaining your prefinished siding, call us. We will be happy to send a painter from our crew to your Collingwood, Ontario home to determine if it is time to give your house a fresh coat of paint.
